May 23rd to the 30th:  Leucopathy treatment

My son’s hand exhibited an unusual discoloration in a localized area. While I initially suspected residual sticker adhesive, the discoloration persisted. I was quite concerned about the possibility of leukoderma due to a family history of genetic skin conditions. I decided to seek a dermatologist’s opinion as soon as possible, scheduling an appointment the very next day after noticing the difference. I was quite anxious the night before the appointment. I hoped the doctor would reassure me that it was nothing serious and would resolve on its own. However, the dermatologist in Yeongchon diagnosed it as leukoderma.  While laser treatment might help reduce the discoloration, it wasn’t guaranteed, and a cream was also suggested. Unfortunately, this clinic had not experience treating pediatric leukoderma, but the diagnosis confirmed my greatest fear: that it was leukoderma and might require treatment outside of our city.

What other options are available for my children’s care? I’ve decided to seek treatment in a different city, so I researched dermatology clinics in Daegu. I identified two clinics that offer leucopathy treatment using excimer lasers, both conveniently accessible by public transportation (train, subway, and bus). Location was a key factor in my decision. I booked appointments for my entire family at one clinic on Monday.  This is a rare opportunity for us to travel to Daegu for medical care. While a previous doctor did diagnose leucopathy, I’m worried if it’s a serious issue. At the same of the last diagnose, the Daegu doctor’s diagnosis of discoloration as leucopathy is confirmed by Wood’s lamp examination, which reveals fluorescence, even on kid’s face. While I’d preferred it to be only on his hand that wasn’t the case. The excimer laser treatment was administered promptly during our visit, as options in my hometown are limited and get a cream to put on his hand and face everyday. It was a short trip for our family from Yeongcheon to Daegu.

I should explore more effective transportation options for my son’s upcoming dermatology appointment, as our town has limited choices. His facial mole needs removal, and the doctor recommended it sooner rather than later to prevent it from growing larger and darker.  During the procedure, applying anesthetic cream proved difficult as he experienced pain and discomfort. He cried throughout the laser treatment, which was understandably upsetting. While this was a painful experience for him, I hope to frame it positively, creating a different kind of memory for us both, beyond the challenges of seeking specialized care far from home.
