Review: Yeongcheon Lotus Lantern Culture Festival 2026

I was aware that the Yeongcheon Lotus Lantern Culture Festival was scheduled to commence at 4 PM on Wednesday, April 22nd. I had hoped to attend with my children, but due to the extremely warm weather the preceding day, I had concerns about our ability to go. However, as the day of the event was overcast, my children were able to walk to the riverside after school and partake in the festivities.

There was a festival booth named “Meeting with a Monk,” and I believed it would be beneficial for my child, who frequently inquires about religious topics, to experience it firsthand, so we proceeded there. As the booth happened to be unoccupied, we had no difficulty in meeting the monks.

There, the children asked the monk about the role of a monk. The monk provided a rather extensive explanation, but my children did not retain any of the details. The only word they recalled was “King.” It appeared they only remembered the word “King” in the context of Buddha originating from a royal family. Nevertheless, I came to realize that the time itself, during which the monk patiently explained things to the children for an extended period, was a valuable aspect of our festival experience.

I find that allocating some funds towards a festival enhances my overall satisfaction. While experiencing and participating in a festival are enjoyable, I believe they are not entirely sufficient for a complete experience. Therefore, I purchased 30 packs of apple extract juice for 12,000 won and 5 packs of Orada snacks for 5,000 won. Having these items in hand provided a sense of comfort upon returning home. At the edge of the booth rows, there appeared to be an area suitable for children.

We participated in two different hands-on activities with the assistance of others. There was no queue for these activities, and someone even made space for us ahead of them. Engaging in pleasant conversations with strangers at the festival, purchasing items, and joining hands-on activities without delay contributed to a wonderful experience.

Furthermore, the weather was delightful—neither too cold nor too hot. It was a cool and breezy day, much like the weather just before rain, but without any actual precipitation. For me, when attending any outdoor festival, the weather is always a crucial factor.
